Folk music has a rich history in New York City. Though many of the folk artists who performed and congregated around Roosevelt Island are now gone, it still remains an important place for folk musicians to meet and perform. The island’s significance was documented by photographer John Cohen in his book “Roosevelt Island” from 1967 which features many of these artists.

The island’s significance was documented by photographer John Cohen in his book “Roosevelt Island” from 1967 which features many of these artists. – Beginning as far back as 1825 when immigrants would gather on weekends at what is now known as Fort Jay, there has been a long tradition of folk performance that can be seen today with performances taking place on Sunday afternoons during the summer months at DeWitt Clinton Park.* – Folk Music Club regulars such as Pete Seeger started performing concerts here early.
