An island arc complex is formed when a subduction zone, or convergent boundary, meets the continental margin. The general shape of an island arc complex is that it has a concave coastline and steep shoreline with high cliffs. It also features an active volcanic zone inland from the coast where molten rock (magma) rises to create new land on top of the oceanic crust.
